I noticed an interesting post on Mashable this morning about fake Twitter followers.
Apparently you can bulk purchase followers. A pointless endeavour as whilst you get a healthy looking follower count you don't get any engagement from the bot/dead/ghost accounts.
The post has an interesting graphic on the celebs stats. Which got me thinking about the surf mags.
So I inputted my own account and the main surf mag accounts into Faker to see what popped out. This is the result. Whilst Inactive accounts aren't of much interest as they are real people that haven't used their account/or only use it to read others tweets. The Good percentage is interesting as these are the people that can actually engage with you and your content. Carve and SurfEurope tie for the lead on 75% (my personal acct is included for comparison on 85%).
The Fake figure is the telling number. Now we all get bot followers, spam followers and crap like that, it's unavoidable. You can see the range (numerical stats after the jump) is from 3% to 8% for all the main mags ...
Apart from the winner.
Which has a massive 32% of fake followers. Somewhere in the region of 2033 fake accounts.
I'll let you draw your own conclusions about the results.
